Are you tired of being inside and are looking for some hands-on, nature and science activities to do outdoors? Then check out Driftwood's new fall programs we're excited to offer. Below is a list of programs we're offering to the public, with a more detailed description of each. Science Saturdays

Time: 9 am - noon                     Ages: 4-13 year olds                   Cost: $20/child                     Location: 100 Arthur J Moore Drive, St. Simons Island (Epworth by the Sea's property)

All Science Saturdays will incorporate hands-on, experiential learning centered around various nature and science topics. Please read below to see what topic will be taught on what day. You can join us for just one class or for all five, as the topics are different each time! Classes will be taught by our education staff, so parents will simply need to drop their children off before class and pick them up at the end. The majority of the activities will occur outside, so please have your kids ready to play outside for three hours. A few activities will take place inside, such as activities dealing with our animal ambassadors. For all programs at Driftwood, masks will be required at certain times, so please send one with your child. We will also be adhering to social distancing guidelines throughout the programs. Please call with any questions you may have about the programs (912) 638-3849; otherwise, please fill out this form to register:https://forms.gle/Ca48aT1HT9NA1KVm6

Marsh River Studies - Sept 5th:   Driftwood is located right on the Frederica River, so come learn about and explore this river with us. The Frederica River is a tidal, marsh river so we’ll start by learning about Georgia’s salt marshes and the plants and animals that call it home. We’ll look for fiddler crabs and touch some marsh mud along the way just for fun! Within the Frederica River, there are many living organisms that live on the docks or can only be seen with a microscope. We will do water quality testing with water in the Frederica River and sample for living things as well. Plankton will be caught during this time, and visitors will be able to look at these amazing creatures under microscopes to get a better view. *Please wear old shoes that can get a little muddy!*

All About Reptiles - Sept 19th:   Snakes, turtles, alligators, and lizards are all types of reptiles we have at Driftwood to teach with. Come hold and touch these unique animals while learning all about their natural lifestyles. Taking care of these animals requires special food and care, so end the class by joining in with helping us to feed and care for our reptiles.

What’s Within the Forest? - Oct 3rd:   The maritime forest is an excellent habitat for animals both big and small. We’ll teach and then use good animal tracking skills to try and find some of these living creatures. Along the way, we’ll learn about insects, why they’re so important, and find some as we’re exploring the forest. One group of animals we’ll for sure see will be a red-tailed hawk, black vulture, and a barred owl, since Driftwood uses these birds for programs. So come visit the forest with us at Driftwood!

Kids' Night Out!

Time: 6-9:30 pm      Ages: 4-13 year olds      Cost: $30/1child, $50/2 children, or $70/3 children   Location: 100 Arthur J Moore Drive, St. Simons Island (Epworth by the Sea)

Who needs a night out these days?! Kids do, of course! Come spend the evening with Driftwood staff doing all sorts of fun things. Each night will consist of a mixture of fun, educational activities, crafts, movie nights, and maybe even a campfire with s’mores. Enjoy the night out having lots of fun while learning a few things too! Due to COVID-19 recommendations, we are encouraging children to either bring a sack dinner with them or eat before they come. Driftwood will be allotting time at the beginning for children to eat their sack dinner or time to play if they've already eaten. Driftwood will also be giving out a snack each night to visitors. Driftwood staff will be directing the evening's activities, so parents will simply need to drop their children off and pick them up at the end. There will be a mixture of indoor and outdoor activities. For all programs at Driftwood, masks will be required at certain times, so please send one with your child. We will also be adhering to social distancing guidelines throughout the programs. Please call with any questions you may have about the program (912) 638-3849; otherwise, please fill out this form to register: https://forms.gle/Ca48aT1HT9NA1KVm6.

Kids' Night Out - Aug 14th

Kids' Night Out – Water Party - Sept 11th:   What’s even better than a regular Kids' Night Out? One with a mud pit and pool party of course! Come spend the evening with Driftwood staff exploring the marsh habitat and then playing in the mud pit nearby. Kids should wear an old swimsuit under old clothes so that they can get really muddy as we splash around in the mud. Old tennis shoes and a towel are also a must! After playing in the mud, kids will be washed off using outside showers and will get ready for pool time. We’ll all enjoy the rest of the night playing games and having free time in the pool.

Summer Programs for 2020

Driftwood is excited to offer some new summer programs. Please read the list of programs below for more detailed information. Then fill out this registration form to let us know you'd like to join: https://forms.gle/kDJiFPkX4xQVTyE68. We hope to see you soon!

Behind-the-Scenes Tours

Driftwood Education Center is a non-profit organization that offers various science and environmental education programs throughout the year. This summer we have expanded our programs to include 3 different Behind-the-Scenes tour options for children looking to learn more about animal husbandry this summer. Both tours will be 3 hours long and will provide opportunities for children to have hands-on experiences with various animals. Please read below to check out specific information about each one and then fill out this form to choose your dates and register: https://forms.gle/kDJiFPkX4xQVTyE68

Reptile Tour – children 8 years and older

Driftwood Education Center has various scaly ambassadors that help teach students all about their unique characteristics and adaptations. Some reptiles we care for include 7 different species of snakes, alligators, 7 different species of turtles, and a bearded dragon. All these animals are used in hands-on teaching throughout the year, so they are used to being handled by people. Before helping with any behind-the-scenes feeding, visitors will have the opportunity to learn about and touch and/or hold an example of each kind of reptile we have.

Driftwood staff feed and care for these animals when guests are usually not around, but a visitor that chooses this Behind-the-Scenes tour will be able to help with some of this care. Visitors will learn what diets each animal requires and will help prepare the alligators’, turtles’, and lizard’s favorite foods. They will also help weigh the offered food, record that in the animal’s care sheets, and even help feed some of the reptiles. This session will be 3 hours long and can be done with or without a parent/guardian. If no parent/guardian is present, Driftwood staff will offer to take pictures of your child holding animals. Certain safety precautions will be required for both human and animal health, such as wearing gloves, wearing masks at times, and making sure to wash hands many times throughout the session! Only 1 student will be registered per session unless there is more than 1 and up to 3 students from the same household interested in the tour. The charge for this program is $40/child. There is no additional charge for parents/guardians staying with their child.

Reptile Tour + Snake Time – children 13 years and older

This tour includes the above-mentioned activities like animal handling and reptile food prep and feeding. This option, though, also includes the opportunity to learn more about snake care and feeding. Visitors will assist in feeding some of the snakes in Driftwood’s care. Due to the more graphic nature of feeding whole mice to the snakes, we recommend only children that are 13 years or older opt for this tour. This tour can be done with or without a parent/guardian and will also be 3 hours long. While Driftwood will allow pictures of students holding animals, we will not allow pictures of the actual feeding process.

Ocean Animals Tour – children 8 years and older

Driftwood Education Center has various ocean animal ambassadors that help teach students all about their unique characteristics and adaptations. All our specimens are local species, as we teach visitors about Georgia species. Some animals we care for include various fish species, sea anemones, crabs, and whelks. Before helping with any behind-the-scenes feedings, visitors will have the opportunity to learn about and touch some of these animals. Driftwood has both a dry and wet touch tank that will allow visitors to have a hands-on experience with various animals.

Driftwood staff feed and care for these animals when guests are usually not around, but a visitor that chooses this Behind-the-Scenes tour will be able to help with some of this care. Visitors will learn what diet each animal requires and will help prepare their foods. They will also help weigh the offered food, record that in the animal’s care sheets, and even help feed the saltwater tank animals.
